Benefits of Electronic Health Records (EHR)
Electronic Health Records (EHR)
Improving Quality & Safe Care
Electronic Health Records (EHR): A shared digital version of a patient's medical chart; containing everything from past to present medical history, lab results, testing, medications, insurance, and treatments
■ Improve the quality of patient care
NP’s knowledge of EHR is integral to manage and maintain up to date medical history, results, imaging and medication to allow for collaboration and comprehensive quality care. This allows NPs to make data driven decisions, improve care, decrease errors, and improve patient outcomes, while personalizing treatment effectively. This up-to-date information allows for collaboration amongst healthcare professionals improving transitions and ensures continuity of care.
■ Increase patient/consumer participation in care
EHR allows patient participation in care by allowing access to their medical records, medication, and offering secure, confidential communication to providers. Educating patients how to participate gives patients empowerment to be informed and actively participate in decision making. Being informed and participating improves long-term health results and management of health.
■ Improve the accuracy of diagnoses and health outcomes
EHR improves the accuracy of
diagnosis and health outcomes by empowering the provider to deliver effective,
safe, evidence -based are using real time data. Having all records, past and
present at the finer tips of providers encourages accuracy, preventing errors
and improving health care outcomes. HER standardizes documentation reducing
errors rom manual documentation, poor handwriting, or failure to report
information pertinent to the management of care.
EHR improves care coordination by improving communication and collaboration between providers and specialists. Medical records are conveniently shared, increasing accuracy and, improves follow up retention. Improved collaboration enables long-term care management of chronic disease by identifying deteriorations in health while optimizing adjustments in treatment plans and changes. EHR improves duplicated testing and decreasing risk of misinterpretations allowing continuity of care. The improved communication between healthcare team enhances the coordination and management allowing management of progress and accuracy (Park & Park, 2022).
Through the use of EHR workflow efficiency is improved, less errors and better use of resources. Data base and digital records reduces paper documentation and charting is faster with improved accuracy. Decrease risks of ordering duplicate testing, less errors and less readmission to hospitals. EHR provide predictive analytics with preventative intervention and screening tools, vaccination schedules which can improve long-term patient care outcomes, reducing healthcare costs.
According to Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. (n.d.). EHRs help improve medical practice management by increasing
practice efficiencies and cost savings. EHRs benefits medical practices including:
- Decrease in transcription costs, and time saving
- Decreased storage for paper chart format, centralized chart management
- Improved documentation and automated coding capabilities
- Reduction in medical errors, better access to patient data and alerts
- Improved quality & safe patient health care through efficient disease management and patient education
Predictive analytics help to identify early warning signs
of deterioration in health, and recommend preventative interventions by analyzing
patient history, testing results, history. Predictive analytics can predict
developing conditions based on lifestyle, age and comorbidities. Using tools to
predict developing conditions allow NPs to intervene and identify vulnerable
populations. This can prevent conditions from worsening or becoming emergent, reducing
unnecessary appointments and timely interventions.
Data allows for current evidence-based
practice which aligns treatment plans with latest, best clinical guidelines.
This technology allows NPs to provide personalized, proactive care improving patient
quality care, safety and long-term health outcomes.
